The Excuse
“I need to pee,” I said, and excused myself.
I didn’t need to pee. It is my way of escaping uncomfortable conversations.
She followed me and listened for confirmation. I know, because her white dress hissed as it brushed against the other side of the door.
I ran water in the sink and moaned loudly, the way she had heard me do whenever I pretend-pee. I turned off the water, waited, then left.
“Better,” she asked.
“Much.”
“Now, where were we?”
“In desperate need of relief,” I said.
“We all have needs,” she said, leading me back to where we were.
